The Origins of Eukaryotes?

Recent work reported by Dr W Ford Doolittle in the February 2000 issue of Scientific American gave this account of the possible routes by which eukaryotes developed their nucleus and in the case of algae and plants, their chloroplasts.  Proteobacteria invaded the pre-eukaryotic cells and formed the mitochondria, while cyanobacteria are responsible for the formation of chloroplasts.
