Antarctica is a very special place for
collecting meteorites - as many have been found there as
over the rest of the world combined. These meteorites,
which are fragments of planets, asteroids and comets,
are often as old as the universe itself.

And because they haven't changed in all that time (like
planet Earth has, for instance), they contain information
about the very origins of our universe itself. In Antarctica,
the large number of meteorites are preserved in the
ice - in glaciers - where over time the ice wears away.
This means that large numbers of meteorites collect
together providing scientists with rich resources to
learn about the history of our universe.
